With all the talk of the latest titles and body tracking, few pay attention to the actual 3D scanning capabilities of the Kinect. Those that have, have stumbled upon a feature that is revolutionary for the price, designed for people who need to import 3D data from a camera. Normally such scanners range in the high thousands, but now it can be had for less than $400 with the Xbox 360. This opens up the door for some applications that would have been undreamed of before. We previously reported on the holographic tests being done using the Kinect to scan the subject in 3D for a holographic projector. But one of the newest ways that people are using this technology is for art purposes such as music videos. ...

The Xbox’s Kinect has really opened up a new market for the “on-rails” shooters. These types of games are designed to move the player without the player controlling where they move, just the actions they take while moving. A good example of this from the arcade and console games is House of the Dead, where the game runs you to a room, you kill everything that you need to and then it runs you into the next room. ...

Rare’s Kinect Sports takes the top spot with 28% of the sales. Following up is Kinectimals and Biggest Loser titles, also from the UK. ...

Michael Bove and his group at the MIT Media Lab have come up with another unique use for the Kinect. Remember that scene in Star Wars where Princess Leia is pleading for help to Obi-Wan and Luke by hologram? Well the researchers have been trying to recreate that scene in real time via cameras, graphic processing and a holographic projector. And while it is certainly not as impressive as the movie in terms of visual quality, the effort is quite amazing in itself. You can see for yourself here in this video. ...

SEGA announced that it will be releasing Virtua Tennis 4 this spring with support for the Wii, Kinect, and the Playstation Move as well as normal controls for the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The game will feature a different type of career system than its predecessors, taking into consideration off court decisions as well as on. It will also have a sort of power up system by which the player can build up momentum and then use it in a burst of energy, both of which should help keep the monotony of previous versions down to a minimum. There will also be online tournaments to become the world champion, which should be cool, though details on how this would work exactly were not available. ...
